Fish of the month

Porcupinefish?

It was the day after Christmas and pickings were lean at the fish market, which made these creatures stand out all the more.

“December fish,” volunteered the vendor.

“Huh?”

“Because we only get them this time of year.”

“You mean like Santa?” Whatever they were, I wasn’t confident buying fish that the vendor couldn’t put a Visayan name to. If I had to guess, they were probably porcupinefish, relatives of the butete (pufferfish) and potentially as poisonous.

Porcupinefish?

In case you’re wondering, the vendor said they were good in tinowa (soup). I should hope so, but I prefer to put off being more adventuresome ’til the new year. This, I say, is simply reckless. Stay safe, everyone!
