Is it just me, or is there something flaky about SkyFlakes these days? This is definitely not the cracker I grew up on, which was crunchy, toasty (I look for browning at the edges, not just grab any pack), and tasted the way SkyFlakes should, which was, well… SkyFlakey. You know what I mean. If you don’t, I ought to tell you that the genuine article didn’t crumble in your mouth, feel mealy, or leave a slightly astringent aftertaste.
How did it come to this? Did the fine people at M.Y. San suddenly decide one day that the original recipe was not good enough? That they could improve on a classic? Or was it a simple case of cutting costs by scrimping on key ingredients or using cheaper substitutes, hoping that consumers wouldn’t notice?
I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised. This isn’t the first time a company has tried to fix something that wasn’t broken. Coca-Cola had the bright idea in 1985 to re-formulate Coke and it was a huge marketing disaster. Closer to home, NestlĂ© bought Magnolia (now simply NestlĂ©) ice cream in 1996 and made it way sweeter. I never touched the stuff again. And now I shall have nothing more to do with a beloved cracker that has been transformed into a pale, poor imitation of its former self. Some good things aren’t naturally meant to last. Others are killed by simple stupidity.
SkyFlakes is dead. Long live SkyFlakes!
